Janet Marie (Thompson) Poole

Janet Thompson Poole of Charlotte, North Carolina, died peacefully on April 2, 2022. The daughter of George and Verona Thompson, Janet was born in Durham, NC on February 15, 1930. She attended Bethesda High School and later received her Dental Assistant Certification. Janet married Winton Poole on June 23, 1950.

From her early years in Durham as a member of Grace Baptist Church and an active volunteer at the King's Daughter's Home, Janet always made community service a priority in her life. This willingness to serve was a common thread for Janet and her husband Winton as they moved from Durham to Greensboro to Charlotte to Lake Norman and finally to Aldersgate Retirement Community.

Janet was a dental assistant in Durham until her girls were born. She then devoted her time and skills to her family and community as PTA President, Girl Scout Leader, active church member, PEO member, and tennis player. Once her daughters were older, Janet became a licensed realtor with Merrill Lynch Realty in Charlotte. She loved helping families find their new homes in the Charlotte area and continued her work as a realtor for many years.

While living at Lake Norman, Janet was instrumental in building the Cornelius Branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. She was an active member of Davidson United Methodist Church. She and Winton had a wonderful group of friends, "The Four Seasons, with whom they traveled frequently. The Pooles also gathered often with their "Beach Friends" at different locations on the coast.

Once she and Winton arrived at Aldersgate, Janet continued her tradition of service. Janet gave much of her time helping others to learn the craft skills at which she excelled. She quickly made friends in the basket room and joined other friends for weekly game nights or card games. She loved to cook for friends and family and always enjoyed sharing good food with others.

When Janet found herself grandmother to four less than communicative teenage boys, she was quick to embrace the burgeoning technology of text messaging to keep in touch with her grandsons. Janet was an enthusiastic player of games: cards, board games, puzzles, and in recent months Wordle. She was also a huge sports fan, especially when Duke was playing basketball! Janet was mentally sharp and curious until her final days.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Winton Poole.

Janet is survived by her daughter Jan Stanley and her husband Steve Stanley of Boone, NC and her daughter Jill Poole and her fiancé Barry Dailey of Davidson, NC and four grandsons: Drew Stanley and his wife Lauren, Lee Stanley and his wife Stephanie, Dylan McDevitt and his wife Elizabeth, and Carter McDevitt. Janet was also known and loved by her 5 great-grandchildren, Ada Stanley, Rowe Stanley, Hazel Stanley, Dare Stanley, and Iris McDevitt.

A celebration of Janet's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 7, 2022 at the Aldersgate Chapel, 3800 Shamrock Road, Charlotte, NC 28215. Reception to follow.
