Kathleen Keihani Obituary

Kathleen Hibner Keihani passed away peacefully on January 15th at the age of 73.  Kathy was born in Brooklyn, NY; the eldest of eight children by Harry and Peggy Hibner. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was called to be a nurse early in life, and this took her from New York to Washington, D.C. to pursue an education in nursing.

While in nursing school in D.C.,  Kathy met the love of her life. Kathy married Abbas Gfri Keihani, and their marriage lasted over forty years before Abbas passed away in 2019. While their romance started in D.C., they eventually settled in Charlotte, N.C. to be closer to their family.  They have one daughter, Karen, and one grandchild, Kelby. Both Karen and Kelby were the center of Kathy and Abbas’ lives.

The couple loved to open their home and host festive dinner parties for family and friends. No gathering was too large and often dinner turned to dancing. Kathy and Abbas were gracious and fun hosts; always sharing ample leftovers with guests and never letting anyone leave empty handed.

Her generosity of spirit was woven throughout her professional and personal life. Kathy was a nurturer and loved to help everyone. She dedicated over thirty years to nursing at Carolinas Medical Center (Atrium) in Charlotte, N.C. Kathy devoted her career to helping all who were sick but found herself compelled to care for cancer patients.

Outside of the home, Kathy was a dedicated Girl Scout leader and volunteered mentoring young girls. She lived her life by the Girl Scout Promise: “On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law.”  She was the Girl Scout Cookie Master for years and managed the successful pick-up and distribution of the cookies with military precision.

Kathy had many hobbies including reading, baking and beach vacations. She was always in the middle of a good book and couldn’t resist a great mystery. She loved to bake and her Christmas cookies, carrot cake, and brownies will be missed. She also loved coastal Carolina and enjoyed many vacations to Charleston.

Kathy is survived by her daughter Karen and grandson Kelby, seven brothers and sisters: Harry Joseph Hibner III, John Hibner (Joanne), Anne Dunn, Carolyn Aylward (Bob), Paul Hibner, Marian Pittman (Damon) and Andrew Hibner (Mary) plus numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial will be held later when it is safe to gather. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society  https://donate3.cancer.org or Girl Scouts of America https://www.girlscouts.org/en/support-us/invest/donate/donate-now-gsusa-council.html

Kathy Keihani died from complications of diabetes. She is free of pain and joyful to be with the family and friends who passed before her.
