Mary O'Brien Obituary

MARY HURST O’BRIEN (Sissie), 75 (and ½!), transitioned from this world to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 28, 2021. She was born December 9, 1945, and raised in Frederick, Maryland. Mary and her family relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1975. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hansel and Nellie Hurst, and one brother, Gary Hurst.

As mostly a single mom, Mary worked tirelessly throughout her life to provide the best life for her children. She was finally able to retire in 2017 after working as a Financial Crimes Investigator for 27 years. She leaves behind a daughter, Stacey Elizabeth Hahn; son, Jason Scott Hahn, as well as her best friend of over 40 years, Patricia Edwards. Her greatest joy in life was raising such wonderful children, both of which have made a huge difference in her life, and in the world. Her deep friendship with her best friend, Pat, taught her what friendship really was. Mary also leaves behind two cats, Punkin and Joey, both of which have provided her with much needed joy and comfort.

Anyone that knew Mary would say that she was a very strong and determined woman. She was a five foot nothing, 90-pound spitfire! She had been through so many challenges in life. She has had 28 surgeries, most being major, and most recently diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in November 2018. Mary was only able to tolerate one dose of chemotherapy before having the Whipple surgery. Through it all, Mary never, ever, gave up or gave in. She always fought through every challenge which was an incredible inspiration to her family, friends, and the medical professionals that treated her over the years. Mary succumbed to the effects that all her medical challenges placed on her heart and transitioned in peace with Stacey and Jason remaining by her bedside.

Although Mary is no longer here, she will always be held close in their hearts and memories. We will always remember her strong spirit and the positive impact she made on everyone she met. We love you Mama Bear! Per her request there will be no viewing and a memorial service will be limited to family. In lieu of flowers, and inspired by Mary’s passion for animals, she requests donations be made in her honor or memory to Friends of Feral Felines, an organization that was near and dear to her heart, your local animal rescue, or your local humane society.
