William “Bill” Earl Bunzey, 83, of Charlotte died on December 11, 2021.
Bill was born April 20, 1938, in Vestal, New York. He was the youngest of the eight children of Florence and Roy Bunzey. His older siblings all predeceased him, with the exception of the eldest, Elizabeth Bunzey Turk. He is also predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Suzanne Pearsall Bunzey.
Bill graduated from Vestal High School in 1956, where he met his future wife, Suzanne. After he completed his basic military training and she completed college in New Jersey, Bill and Sue were married in Albany, New York, in 1962. Together they had two children, Craig (wife, Mary Mudge) and Marceline “Marne” (husband, John Murawski). Bill also was graced with three very beloved grandchildren: Aaron, Suzanna, and Julia. As a father and grandfather, Bill was an excellent listener and a kind purveyor of gentle guidance.
During the 1960s, Bill served as a medic in the National Guard. In the early 1970s, he started his two-decade career at IBM. Bill was known for his mathematical skills, precision, and respectful demeanor. Bill’s designs and prototypes have been patented, and he felt especially gratified by his work on the first automatic teller machine (ATM).
During the 1980s, IBM transferred Bill and his family to Charlotte. He retired in the 1990s to care for Sue, who passed away in 1998. Bill later met Vergie Pifer, who would remain his companion for over 20 years. He was not only very fond of her, but also of her children and grandchildren. Bill had an easy-going manner and an understated, slightly humorous charm. He was a loved uncle and had many nieces and nephews, with four special nieces in particular: Denise, Jody, Mary, and Cecilia.
Memorials may be made in Bill’s memory to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region (hpccr.org). A private graveside service will be held at Amity Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte. Carolina Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.
